Frontier Rising was commissioned by The Moses Lake High School Bands and the surrounding community in Moses Lake, Washington as a means of sharing the small town American story of expedition, settlement, and development. The piece is a journey of tenacity, resolve, and ingenuity that follows the sequence of rugged New World frontiers as they steadily develop into established modern communities.

LOVE the ADVENTURE

Love the Adventure is a musical epic bursting with the dynamism of a 21st-century harmonic affect. It thrives on a driving vigor meant to illustrate the wild ride that is life. Life will send triumphs and tragedies, banalities and mysteries, fear and excitement- but wherever the road leads, face it with a courageous resilience, embrace the uncertainty, and love the adventure.

MIDNIGHT RAID

Midnight Raid is a large, powerhouse march that combines striking moments of bombast with expressive moments of contained energy within the framework of a ternary. The “A” sections string together several aggressively orchestrated textures and the “B” section develops a four-note legato motive that is foreshadowed in the introduction. While soft and warm at half-tempo, the inhibited tension of the “B” section beckons the return of the A section in an even more dynamic and vigorous statement. Midnight Raid is ideal for college and advanced high school bands.

WALTZ and CHACONNE

Waltz and Chaconne is a mid-weight work comprised of two movements. This vibrant piece is perfect for filling out the middle of a concert set. The first movement provides a melodically playful temperament, while the second movement brings a warm, sonorous depth that eventually builds to a canorous climax. Waltz and Chaconne is ideal for college and advanced high school bands.

X
for Wind Band
X is a sci-fi scavenger hunt set in year 3057. The piece follows the high-tech campaign in the first person through intense aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic maneuvers, fueled by the fervor of an unstoppable drive to win. One might predict racing tempos and dashing runs. And one would be wrong. X manifests through a heavy double-digit tempo packed with thumping bass lines and anxious percussion. A bluesy drama underscores the swagger of the hunt and a sparse melodic treatment shapes the interior of this altogether unpredictable feat.

A GAME OF CHANCE

A Game of Chance features several darkened variations on the 12-bar blues progression. The swing-feel and minor key setting of the 12-bar blues contrasts traditional orchestration and dynamic sensibilities engendering a shadowy, dramatic tension borne of both worlds. The title references specific segments within the work that call for improvisation, leaving the result to chance. A Game of Chance is ideal for high school bands.

CLAY COUNTY OVERTURE
for Wind Band

Clay County Overture is a three-part minisuite.  The first movement flows through the rushing, recreational waters of the historic Red River.  The second movement- a light, dairy-laden sugar rush- bounces with the boundless stride of a warm summer day. The third movement booms and thunders with the force of a Viking exploration. This traditionally styled band adventure excites with integrative percussion parts, frequent low and middle-voiced melodies, and catchy, interlocking part independence.

IF EVER YOU THINK OF ME

If Ever You Think of Me is a through-composed tale of chance, wanderlust, war, and conquest- the elements of which are translated through a courageous 6/8 opening that collides into a longing 5/4 which then yields to a warring 3/4 and culminates into an emotive and then triumphant 4/4.  Told from the perspective of a wide-eyed teen fighting the storms of circumstance, If Ever You Think of Me is a full-fledged adventure suffused with feeling, character, and ambition.

IMMUTABLE

From the dark of a winter night emerged the beginnings of a wildfire that would quickly grow to engulf 300,000 acres of Southern California, destroying homes, businesses, and landmarks. In two adjoined acts, Immutable tells the story of the harrowing adrenaline, the courageous fight, and a determined spirit.

NEVER TOO LATE (Advanced Version)

When one finds oneself with more trombones than one knows what to do with, one should unleash the tenor brass army on Never Too Late.  This partially jazzed wind band anthem slips and slides around a soulful refrain, intertwining it with wistfully cozy contemplations.  It’s a contrary sound for the traditional wind band and a lot of fun to dig into.

SPRING SONG
for Wind Band
From the mystery of winter comes the promise of spring, 
And on the foundation of that promise grows every living thing.
Spring Song leads with a light bounce to accentuate the mood of the season but is faithful to include the depth of anticipation implicit in the transition. Spring Song pushes ever forward with charged assurances, blossoming into a polyphonic expression of the season until, alas, pivoting into a much heavier, grandiose conclusion that encapsulates the hope of spring and leaves the listener at summer’s doorstep.

WINDSOR CASTLE

Windsor Castle is a commemoration of one of the world’s most prominent and enduring castles. Using fanfares, period-inspired melodic and harmonic structures, and stylistically varied presentations of a central theme, this piece strives to illustrate the activities of the royal court, capture a range of historical circumstances, and ultimately channel the strength and majesty that this castle has come to symbolize. Windsor Castle is ideal for high school bands.

ALUMINUM SHARKS

An upbeat dose of cinematic jazz, Aluminum Sharks derives its nature from the punchy themes and textures of the tenor and bass instruments and the alternating percussion patterns that facilitate the many transitions as the piece mutates from dark-toned jazz themes to tense cinematic junctures, to moments of stark haphazardry. Throughout the piece you will hear several diverse elements that work together in context, even though these same elements out of context would seem to have about as much in common as sharks and aluminum. Aluminum Sharks is ideal for intermediate high school bands and advanced middle school bands.

BOARDWALK CASEY

Bright, upbeat, and spry, Boardwalk Casey takes the listener on an optimistic weekend jaunt through a lively thoroughfare. Step away from it all and join Boardwalk Casey on this light, carefree outing.

BULLET TRAIN

Bullet Train begins as a moderately paced rhythmic cadence. It slowly accelerates throughout the length of the piece into a brisk, energetic jaunt that is supported by firm, forceful bass lines and driving percussion rhythms. The piece is held together by a crisply articulated motive that weaves in and out of smoothly articulated melodies. These melodies ultimately give way to a candescent haste as the piece gathers momentum and propels into an ever-increasing velocity. Bullet Train is ideal for middle school bands. THE CLOCKMAKER’S WORKSHOP

The Clockmaker's Workshop is a light, animated work that attempts to emulate the mechanical activity of a clockmaker's workshop. The coordinated use of percussion presents a great opportunity for a skilled percussion section to shine. THE CRACKDOWN
for Wind Band
The Crackdown is a dense post-millennial march set in a minor mode. The percussion dominates with heavy grooving and driving mallet work. Somewhat unusually, The Crackdown is achieved largely without the use of any significant melody. The upper voices pulse with popping staccatos while the lower voices power through with the confident stride of martial brigade. As call-and-response fragments bandy between sections, the percussion sets the stage for a thrashing intersection of musical genres.

OUTER SPACE: THE ESCAPE FROM 2020

It’s safe to say that the year 2020 will go down as one of the most distinctive years in recorded history. Every month rained down new, unprecedented disasters: Raging wild fires, crippling social and political unrest, economic collapse, and of course- the coronavirus.  

After months of worldwide lockdowns, quarantines, hazmat chic fashion, and general hysteria, it seems that outer space remains the only viable option.  So with that, we’re loading up the spaceship.  Back in 5.  

…years.

OPERATION BLAZE

Operation Blaze is a page from the memoirs of fictional hero, Jackson Birch. This suspenseful spy flick follows Agent Birch as he infiltrates Sancom Industries on a rescue mission and escapes just before the explosive destruction of the facilities. Operation Blaze is ideal for intermediate high school bands and advanced middle school bands.

OVER EVERY DARK FEAR (Coming Fall 2024)

Over Every Dark Fear is a lyrical endeavor with medieval undertones. It depicts a young dragon’s coming of age and passes through moods of innocence, determination, and euphoria as the dragon slowly and steadily learns to fly. Steering clear of the conventional wind band ternary, this reluctant rondo finds its interest and sense of progression in a strategically shifting pulse and subtle variation in meter and tempo.  Though rich and melodic, this offering is not without a bit of intricacy in the diverting sections of the rondo, which adds fullness to the character of the storyline.

PARAGLIDING

Paragliding is a bright and energetic expression of the thrill of flying. This soaring panorama attempts to capture the complete experience from the eager anticipation of take-off, to the expansive awe of midflight, to the triumphal rush of landing. Celebrate the wonder of flight with this spirited voyage. Paragliding is ideal for intermediate high school bands and advanced middle school bands.

PRIDE of the LION

Pride of the Lion opens with a thunderous statement of a theme that channels the boldly majestic character of the lion- ruler of the vast, open plains. This heavy burst of energy opens and closes the piece, encapsulating a trio of contra-distinctive perspectives that evoke the lighter virtues of the lion's existence. With regular fluctuation between keys and modes as well as regular variation of textures, this march is able to offer the listener an appealing medley of colors. Pride of the Lion is ideal for intermediate high school bands and advanced middle school bands.

The Mousetrap Riddle is a light, inquisitive work that underscores the deliberations of a local detective as he works to solve a riddle posed to him by a precocious youth. Lurking through a nightshade field, this dark andante creeps with a slippery chromatic melody and the looming of heavy percussion.  During this chancy errand, the listener encounters crunchy dissonances and haunting interludes.  The interior of the piece tiptoes with apprehension, allowing the mystery of the upper woodwinds to float over eerie percussion until the piece is pulled into the magnetic grip of a full ensemble climax.  Circumstance then cool into a curiously deceptive conclusion.

RAFER

Rafer commemorates the colorful and varied exploits of Rafer Johnson- a decathlete turned actor. This piece is a triumphant expression of his exciting Olympic career and honors his legacy with an energetic spree through a series of exultantly upbeat themes.

THE RESCUE
for Wind Band
The Rescue is a musical take on the age-old fantasy genre. Starting at a place of bleak uncertainty, shaded melodies follow the search that leads to the discovery, but is it too late? Just as defeat appears eminent, hope emerges, victory prevails, and the rescue is made with a triumphant escape on the strength of a sonorous call-and-response theme bringing the story to a powerful ending.

CIRCUS
for Wind Band
Circus brings all the fun and suspense of the big top to the concert hall from the nail-biting moments of anticipation, to the execution of the stunt, to the big “ta-da!” at the end. The music leaves plenty of room for the imagination to enjoy all of the jumps, flips, tightrope walks, juggling, and equilibristic feats one would expect. Circus utilizes the entire ensemble to paint lively scenarios and includes low wind melodies, showmanly percussion, and absorbing high wind interludes.

FARM and SEEK
for Wind Band
Farm and Seek splashes across the audio sphere with rolling waves of crescendos and bright, bouncy off-beats that animate the quirky happenings of a farmyard game of hide and seek. Darting glances and discreet scurrying drive the piece's momentum, but what happens in the end is anyone's guess. Farm and Seek is ideal for first year bands.

MARCH AVENAL
for Wind Band with optional rhythm section and strings.
March Avenal is a modern interpretation of the march. With its inclusion of optional string and rhythm section parts, it becomes a great fit for a wide variety of instrumental contexts. The piece opens, closes, and transitions with a darkened percussion cadence and toggles back and forth between a low, heavy, minor groove and an upbeat, major groove. The former channels the swank bluster of the southern style marching format and the latter counters that direction with a sanguine summertime vigor. A long way from Sousa, March Avenal takes a fresh look at the genre that birthed the wind band.

ZEROS and ONES

Zeros and Ones a depiction of the hypnotic stream of endless numbers washing across the black backdrop of the digital underworld. It begins with a flat, deliberative theme that occurs three times throughout the piece, leaving room for colorful aberrations between each statement. Together, these segments attempt to capture the motion of the zeros and ones as they stream through the computational vortex, transforming from strings of individual digits into binary code. Zeros and Ones is ideal for beginning bands.
